Thanks to the fantastic support from our donors and volunteers, SRA is able to offer 4 unique nature preserves with over 47 miles of recreational trails. We welcome you to explore the preserves below.
Hidden Valley Preserve
Northeast of Washington Depot is Hidden Valley Preserve, 940 acres of mixed forest and meadows crisscrossed by nearly 20 miles of trails that offer a variety of terrain for hiking. Wooded hillsides cascade into the River Valley below, creating breathtaking views from the Lookout and Pinnacle.
Macricostas Preserve
The 516-acre Macricostas Preserve offers an array of landscapes, as meadows and farm fields blend seamlessly with wooded ridges and wetlands. Magnificent views, rare species of birds, and colorful stands of wildflowers make this an extraordinary destination in northwest Connecticut. Enjoy a leisurely hike around the hayfield or a more challenging trek up to Waramaug’s Rock.
Steep Rock Preserve
The 998-acre Steep Rock Preserve offers hiking trails which follow the river banks and provide access into the hillsides above.

Located in the southeast corner of Washington, the 220-acre West Mountain Preserve showcases several active agricultural fields, as well as a mix of sunny meadows and shady, open forests. 1.25 miles of hiking trails crisscross this landscape, with more to open in the fall of 2022.
