Spring Guide | Steep Rock’s Preserves

Springtime at SRA’s preserves is pure magic. As the forests shake off winter’s chill, the hills turn bright green, wildflowers bloom along the trails, and the Shepaug River roars. Whether you’re here for a heart-pumping summit climb, a riverside stroll, or a chance to spot migrating birds, these preserves in Washington, Connecticut deliver. Here’s your spring guide—where to go, what to see, and amazing trails for every kind of adventurer.

Need-to-Know Info

Hours: Open dawn to dusk, every day
Cost: FREE! But donations help keep the trails in great shape
Dogs: Allowed on leash—please clean up after them
Bug Warning: Ticks wake up in spring—wear bug spray & do a post-hike check
Facilities: Limited—bring water. No restrooms. Visit great local coffee shops!
Leave What You Find: Leave plants, rocks and other natural objects.

Steep Rock

Tunnels, Summits & Riverside Bliss

1-3 hours | 🚶‍♂️ Easy to Strenuous | ⛰ Historic Trails & River Views

With a dramatic old railroad tunnel, riverside paths, and one of the best overlooks in Connecticut, this preserve has it all.  Or, grab a canoe and a friend and head down the Shepaug River while the river is still high. See the beauty of Steep Rock from a whole new vantage point.

Perimeter Hike – 7.0 mi

Hidden Valley

Beautiful Bridges, Overlooks, and Twisting Forest Paths

1.5-3 hours | 🚶‍♀️ Easy to Moderate | 🌉 Bridges & Overlooks

This preserve is packed with twisting forest paths, a beautiful suspension bridge over the Shepaug River, and great viewpoints.  Be on the lookout for trilliums, bloodroot, Dutchman’s breeches, trout lilies, violets, spring beauties, and Jack-in-the-pulpit blooming along the trails.   Join us on May 10 for a guided hike–registration required.

WONDROUS WILDFLOWERS in the HIDDEN VALLEY

Macricostas

Views, Birds, and Waramaug’s Rock

1.5-4 hours | 🚶 Moderate to Strenuous | 🌿 Scenic Views

Spring in Macricostas is a bird safari and wildflower heaven. If you’re here in April or May, bring a camera—because this place explodes with color. Think rolling green meadows and butterflies everywhere.  Or, grab a book and relax atop of Waramaug’s Rock for the afternoon.

Staff Spring Picks

Hayfield Hike – 1.5 mi. Flat to slight elevation gains.  Wet conditions in spring.

Double View Hike – 3.25 mi. Breathy elevation gains with amazing views.

Perimeter Hike – 4.5 mi. This trail begins with a gentle loop around the open hayfield before rising steadily toward the northern ridge, where the Boulders Trail offers striking contrast.
