A Century of Land Protection
As our centennial celebration draws to a close, we invite you to take a visual journey through 100 years of land protection in Washington.
From the first 186 acres conserved by our founder, Ehrick Rossiter, to over 6,000 acres protected today, this video traces Steep Rock’s steady growth—through preserves, conservation easements, and a century of shared commitment.
With 87% of our land donated by caring, conservation-minded landowners, experience how community dedication has shaped the open spaces, rivers, and forests we cherish today.
See you on the trails,

Magical Gift Expands Macricostas Preserve
We are thrilled to announce the permanent protection of 85 acres adjoining Macricostas Preserve—generously donated by Ben Nickoll and Chrissy Armstrong.
This isn’t just more land on a map—it’s a vital connector for wildlife and watershed protection. At its heart lies The Pinnacle, neighbor to Waramaug’s Rock and the highest peak overlooking Washington.
Oak and hickory line the ridges, with open glades, sculpted rock outcrops, and a secluded valley dotted with glacial boulders, vernal pools, and headwater streams.
The land protects two critical watersheds—Lake Waramaug / East Aspetuck River and Meeker Swamp / Shepaug River.
Gifts of land like this don’t happen every day—and we’re bursting with gratitude for this incredible act of generosity. (see photo at top)
Become a Volunteer Visitor Center & Museum Host
Love local history and connecting with visitors? We’re looking for friendly, curious volunteers to welcome guests at the newly restored Steep Rock Visitor Center & Museum at the Isaac Camp House in Macricostas Preserve.
Hosts assist visitors by answering questions about Steep Rock’s preserves, the museum, and the town—providing brochures, maps, and helpful information.
Volunteer shifts are 2–3 hours on Saturdays and Sundays. Training will be provided by Steep Rock staff and trustees. Interested? Email us at info@steeprockassoc.org.
Steep Rock Summit Access Temporarily Closed
The Centennial Loop Trail in Steep Rock Preserve, impacted by fire control efforts, is temporarily closed for restoration work through mid-December.
Access to the Steep Rock summit via this route is currently unavailable.
We’re deeply grateful for all the donors supporting this sustainable trail initiative and appreciate your patience while we complete these improvements—your future summit hikes will be even better!
Your Generosity Blew Us Away!
Within 24 hours of launching our “Thanksgiving Pizza” fundraiser, the Steep Rock community went above and beyond—donating over 300 pizzas (triple our goal!) to neighbors in need.
Each pizza will be lovingly created by Carol Bonci and her son Cornelius of Bonci Pizza in Sharon and delivered to the New Milford and Warren/Washington Food Banks leading up to Thanksgiving.
Your generosity helps feed our community at a critical time—and supports Judea Garden’s mission to provide fresh produce to local families throughout the year.
You’ve more than earned a “Pizza” our heart. ❤️
Hike it. Wear it. Love it.
