Steep Rock Association is strengthened by an extraordinary community of volunteers and partners whose dedication to conservation is truly inspiring. Last year, we launched our Community Partnership Program, bringing together businesses, organizations, schools, and sponsors to take on high-impact conservation work. The response has been overwhelming. Partners have told us they not only found their experience deeply rewarding, but came away with new knowledge, skills, and the satisfaction of making a real, visible difference in our natural landscape. This month, we’re proud to spotlight some of our remarkable partners in action; from building purple martin nests and managing invasive species to roadside cleanups, trail passports, and our upcoming Rossiter 5K. Their contributions are central to everything we do. Interested in getting involved? We’d love to welcome you. Reach out to Addie Mehl, SRA’s new Community Engagement Coordinator. Addie will be leading our volunteer and community programming efforts and looks forward to connecting with you soon.
See you on the trails,
Brian Hagenbuch, Ph.D.

Purple Martin Habitat Installed at Macricostas Preserve
Purple Martins are our largest swallow and a cavity-nesting bird whose populations have declined by 24% over the last 55 years – that’s 2.8 million birds lost. All Purple Martins east of the Rocky Mountains nest only in human-provided housing. With the tutelage of Laurie Doss of Kent Land Trust, Marvelwood School, and the Purple Martin Conservation Association, our staff installed a housing unit in quality habitat at Macricostas Preserve with hopes of establishing a new colony. You can find the housing unit east of the main parking area, past Judea Garden. We’re incredibly grateful to the Connecticut Ornithological Association for granting us funds to purchase this welcoming residence. Check it out during your next visit, and let us know if you see any occupant
Annual Roadside Cleanup
Steep Rock staff was proud to partner with Washington Environmental Council and participate in the Annual Roadside Cleanup Event. We removed more than 6 massive bags of trash and debris along Christian Street, Bee Brook Road, and Route 202. These efforts help protect local ecosystems and keep our shared spaces clean, safe, and accessible for all.
