Odonata (Dragonfly and Damselfly) Survey Blitz, Sat., July 12, 2025 (Canceled)

Become a “dragon hunter” for a day of conservation science in Steep Rock Association (SRA) preserves, learning about our fascinating dragonflies and catching them as part of a multi-year research project.

An all-out survey blitz on July 12, 2025 will begin at the main Macricostas Preserve parking lot located at 124 Christian Street, New Preston, CT 06777. Our team will receive an overview on dragonfly ecology and training on capture technique by Connecticut’s leading Odonata professional before the search for different species begins. Information obtained from the blitz will aid both local and regional dragonfly conservation, and all involved will surely leave with a greater knowledge and appreciation for these amazing invertebrates.

Participants should bring both hiking and wading footwear (sandals or water shoes), a small backpack for personal items, water, and lunch/snacks. All other survey equipment will be provided. The blitz is scheduled from 9:00AM – 5:00PM with the possibility for additional late evening effort. Any duration of involvement is welcome and greatly appreciated. A forecast of inclement weather will postpone the event to Sunday, July 13, 2025.
