CT Trails Day, Steep Rock Preserve History Hike, Sunday, June 7, 2026
SUNDAY, JUNE 7, 2026
Save the Date! Registration opens May 6.
This is an easy 4.2-mile hike. The first ¾ of a mile consists of 140 ft of gradual elevation change both uphill and downhill. The remaining 3.5 miles follows Tunnel Road and the historic Shepaug Railroad bed, both of which are predominantly flat.
Starting at the Steep Rock Preserve main parking lot, the route takes hikers up a small incline to the Holiday House ruins. Descending back down to Tunnel Rd, hikers walk along the Shepaug River getting glimpses of ducks, great blue herons, and other animals that call the river home. Hikers will then traverse along the old railroad bed which leads directly to the 180-ft long train tunnel that was carved through bedrock over 150 years ago. Hikers will then use a short connecting trail to get back onto Tunnel Road for the hike back to their cars.
Dress for hiking: we recommend sturdy shoes, water, and a small snack. Bug spray and sunscreen should be applied ahead of time.
Well behaved dogs on leash are welcome.
