Steep Rock is proud to join a coordinated effort to support Purple Martins (Progne subis) in western Connecticut — a region where until recently they hadn’t lived.
Purple Martins are our largest swallow and a cavity-nesting bird that is entirely dependent on human-supplied housing. With the tutelage of Laurie Doss of Kent Land Trust, Marvelwood School, and the Purple Martin Conservation Association, our staff installed a housing unit in quality habitat at Macricostas Preserve with hopes of establishing a new colony. We’re incredibly grateful to the Connecticut Ornithological Association for granting us funds to purchase this welcoming residence. Check it out during your next visit, and let us know if you see any occupants!
